Baby Manjusri

Story

The saying “When three people gather, wisdom arises” refers to Manjusri Bodhisattva, who is revered as the embodiment of wisdom.
In this work, Manjusri is depicted as a gentle baby reading a book together with his loyal lion companion.

In traditional iconography, Manjusri holds a wisdom sword (a jeweled sword symbolizing insight) in his right hand and an azure lotus flower with a sutra in his left, while seated in meditative posture atop a lion.
He is known to bestow blessings for academic success, examinations, artistic abilities, creative talent, and clarity of mind.

One of his most distinctive features is the topknot hairstyle, called motodori in Japanese.
This unique style makes him instantly recognizable in Buddhist paintings and sculptures.

Manjusri is often depicted riding a lion because the lion symbolizes wisdom—its roar dispelling ignorance.

In this baby version, Baby Manjusri has been friends with the lion since childhood.
In a serene lotus field, the little Manjusri leans against the lion, absorbed in his book, while the lion quietly watches over him, waiting for his study to finish.

Bodhisattvas are diligent practitioners who remain close to us.
Before awakening to their purpose and entering the spiritual path, many deities and bodhisattvas go through profound personal journeys.
They are not born enlightened; rather, through steady devotion and compassionate resolve, they grow into beings who vow to guide and save all sentient life.
