“White Dragon God, Cherry Blossoms and Waves”Ceiling Mural Ascending to the Sky

Myosho-ji (Nichiren Sect, Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture)

From June 7 to 9, 2024, I completed the installation of a ceiling painting in the outer hall of Myosho-ji Temple, located in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture.
This grand panoramic ceiling painting, measuring 2.5 meters in height and approximately 8 meters in width, is the world’s first ceiling painting created using my original “Tosaiga” (earth-color painting) technique. Depending on the natural light filtering in, the scales shimmer in a spectrum of colors—red, blue, green, pink, and purple—changing its expression beautifully throughout the day.
The temple head priest commissioned this ceiling painting after seeing my work featuring the “Shichimen Tennyo” motif, which I had created for the cover of the Nichiren Sect’s “Shuho” publication in the fiscal year 2021. After three years of preparation, I was finally able to deliver this piece.
The project took two years to conceptualize and one year to complete the painting. Throughout the process, I posted updates almost daily on TikTok and Instagram. Whenever I hit creative roadblocks, the support and encouragement from many fans helped me overcome the long and challenging journey. I am deeply grateful to everyone who stood by me.
Artist Talk at the Temple (June 7–9, 2024)

Over the three days during the installation work, we held a temple artist talk series under the theme, “Become a Witness to History!” Hosted by Eisui, the talks attracted many participants each day. While observing the master carpenters at work, I shared behind-the-scenes stories from the two years of creating this ceiling painting.
This ceiling artwork will, I believe, watch over many important moments in the lives of people at this temple for hundreds of years to come. Being able to spend the inaugural days of this artwork’s journey alongside so many people was a tremendous joy for me.
I sincerely hope this ceiling painting will continue to be loved by many for generations to come.
