Baby Ryūzu Kannon

Story

The Baby Series was born from the idea that if deities are also subject to reincarnation, then they too must have once been innocent newborns.
This series envisions divine beings—before they became compassionate bodhisattvas or powerful gods—as pure, adorable babies who have yet to gain wisdom but are full of potential.

This particular work depicts the babyhood of Ryūzu Kannon (Dragon-Headed Kannon), one of the 33 manifestations of Kannon Bodhisattva.
Kannon is known as a merciful being who vows to save all sentient beings from suffering, taking on 33 different forms to reach those in need.
Among them, Ryūzu Kannon is traditionally portrayed standing atop a dragon’s head, often holding a water vase that washes away worldly desires or a sacred jewel that grants wishes.

In this piece, I imagined what Ryūzu Kannon might have been like as a child—sharing her early days with a baby dragon.
Rather than viewing the dragon as a mere steed, I see them as soul companions who grew up together, sharing both joy and sorrow.
They communicate beyond words, bound by deep mutual understanding, and eventually dedicate their lives side by side to the salvation of all beings.

Thinking of them in this way brings to mind heartwarming scenes: taking baths together, sharing meals, laughing and crying like siblings or lifelong friends.
Someday, I hope to depict such tender moments of their daily lives as well.
